There is this theory that I have. I suppose that there is a bit of a conspiratorial element to my theory, and I am probably not the first person to which this thought has occurred. Nonetheless I will present it to you here. My theory is that the world is both run, and run by, runners. Runners are a kind of secret and fanatical group. The rest of the world sees the rituals that we perform, the long runs, the threshold runs, the intervals. Although other people glimpse everything, they understand nothing. We are merely parts of the landscape; the squirrel on the telephone wire, the bluebird, the man mowing the lawn, and the runner. People in positions of great influence are runners - high school principals, community activists, global warming researchers, entrepreneurs, grand jurors and poets. Wherever you may be, fellow runner, you are one of the movers and shakers, or you soon will be. Welcome to the Mafia. Running the world, literally.
My name is Marshall Genn and I am committed to pursuing life to the fullest and for me to do so I am determined to see where the sport and ritual of running can take me. At the risk of sounding foolish, I intend to live an intentional life. I am from Berkeley, California and have lived in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua and Southern Oregon. Currently I live in New Haven, Connecticut and dream about returning to the trails, fire roads and access roads that traverse the rolling hills and mountains of the West. I live here with my incredible fiancé, Haley and we have a great time pursuing life together. I work with resilient students with tough situations and it helps put sports in perspective. Social justice and running are equally important in my life.
